Kerr, Deborah.
Actress. Born Deborah Jane Kerr-Trimmer, on September 30th, 1921, in Helensburgh, Scotland. Trained as a dancer at her aunt's drama school in Bristol, England, she won a scholarship to the Sadler's Wells ballet school and at 17 made her London debut in the corps de ballet of 'Prometheus.' However, she soon discovered that she was more interested in drama and began playing bits and walk-ons in various Shakespearean productions. In the early 40s she made her British film debut as a Salvation Army lass in Major Barbara. Other film roles followed in which she typically played cool and reserved well-bred ladies. In 1947, on the strength of her sensitive portrayal of a nun in Black Narcissus, she was brought to Hollywood by MGM to play the lead opposite Clark Gable in The Hucksters. She retained her serene, ladylike image on the American screen until 1953, when she was given the opportunity to play, on a loan-out to Columbia, a turbulent adulteress in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. She has since played a wider variety of characters of a broader emotional range while maintaining a ladylike poise.
She was nominated for a best actress Oscar six times, for Edward My Son (1949), From Here to Eternity (1953), The King and I (1956), Heaven Knows Mr. Allison (1957), Separate Tables (1958), and The S u n d o w n e r s (1960). She remained a leading star throughout her screen career until her announced retirement in 1969. She has since returned occasionally to the stage, and appeared in a feature and several Tevee movies. Her second husband (since 1960) is novelist and screenwriter Peter VIERTEL. They make their home in Switzerland.

Kerr (Laura) & Kerr (Tom)
COUP DE THEATRE:

Tea and Sympathy

* * * * * * * *

To the outside world, the newlyweds were leading a fantasy existence, one that became even more like a fairy tale when the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that Joanne Woodward had been nominated in the best actress category for The Three Faces of Eve. The other nominees were Anna Magnani for Wild is the Wind, Elizabeth Taylor for Raintree County, Deborah Kerr for Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, and Lana Turner for Peyton Place.
Not only was an Oscar the most prestigious prize of them all, it meant, in most cases, far more money for the actor on future projects - it meant power for the performer as well.
"I'm not trying to wipe out any possibility of getting an award," Joanne told a reporter, "but if I get it, I hope it will be for my acting ability and not for the things I say or don't say on interviews."
Fox had two other pictures, and actresses, in the Oscar race that year, so Joanne was far from a shoo-in. There would be a devided vote as far as the studio's Academy members were concerned. Deborah Kerr was the favorite, and Lana Turner was a surprise nominee. Joanne needed all the favorable public relations she could get.
Joanne knew who she would vote for: "I think I will vote for Deborah Kerr. The Oscar for best performance should not be given for a single role; continued excellence should be the basis." Today this philosophy makes perfect sense, but in the Hollywood of 1958 statements like this were suicidal.
As Oscar time approached, Joanne said Deborah Kerr would win for sure.
At Hollywood's Pantages Theater, people wondered if the little boy sitting next to Paul Newman was his son, Scott. Joanne sat on the other side of Paul, in the aisle seat, of course. Toward the end of the evening John Wayne took the podium to read off the nominees for the best actress award. The tension was palpable. Joanne looked beautiful and anxious. John Wayne announced the winner: "Joanne Woodward."
Joanne and Paul appeared shocked, then jubilant. All her statements about how it didn't matter, and how she thought someone else deserved the award, seemed to vanish as she ran down the aisle to claim her prize.
"I've been waiting for this moment since I was nine years old!" she exclaimed into the microphones. "I'd like to thank my parents for having more faith in me than anyone could."
At the postceremony party at the beverly hilton hotel, congratulatory telegrams poured in. Orchids arrived for Joanne, with a note from Elizabeth Taylor. A telegram arrived from Deborah Kerr: "Congratulations, Joanne. Here I go again. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride."

Joanne's dress at the Oscar ceremonies had created a stir!
But that's another story still . . .

Fine, funny and recommended. It has its weak points, the storyline is the least important with these fine actors and brilliant direction. Cary Grant and Jean Simmons' first scene together is absolutely wonderful. Deborah Kerr is also good; Robert Mitchum, maybe intentionally, is a bit of an odd player here. Familiar to the Grant-Bergman split-screen telephone scene in Stanley Donen's Indiscreet - he was born April 13th, 1924 in Columbia, South Carolina - there's an adorable scene with all four leading actors here. A man has beeen charged with murdering the 78-year-old brother of Hollywood film star Deborah Kerr. Retired journalist Edmund Trimmer died on Monday after an alleged assault outside a post office in West Heath, Birmingham, on Tuesday lunchtime. Mr. Trimmer, who was known as Ted, was the former managing editor of Birmingham-based Central News.
West Midland Police said a 55-year-old man from Redditch, Worcestershire, had been charged with his murder. Mr. Trimmer was the younger brother of LOVE ON THE DOLE star Deborah Kerr, who was nominated for several Oscars for best actress for her roles in films such as FROM HERE TO ETERNITY and THE KING AND I.
Deborah's agent Anne Hutton said the retired actress was not available for comment. Mr. trimmer, who worked in Fleet Street and for HTV, HTV and Central TV, had suffered a stroke in recent months. He retired as managing editor of Birmingham-based Center News in 1989.
Central's controller of news Laurie Upshon described his former colleague as a "gentleman of the old school". "I worked with him about six or seven years and he was a lovely man," he said.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday.
